How Myopia Control is Changing Lives

AAOMC at the vision by design meeting shows the life changing journey of myopia control.

What is myopia?

Myopia is another term for nearsightedness, a condition where distance vision is blurry. It usually begins at age 6 and progressively worsens until age 25.

Is there anything that can be done to prevent myopia from worsening?

Previously, the only option was to prescribe stronger glasses each year. However, now we can slow or even stop myopia from progressing. This is accomplished with myopia control, a system of special contact lenses or glasses.

Why is it important to prevent myopia from worsening?

We once believed the worst part of myopia was declining vision and stronger glasses. We now know that myopia not only a vision problem, but a major health problem. Myopia significantly increases the risk of serious eye diseases, which can all lead to blindness. These include: cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. Don’t let your child’s vision continue to deteriorate every year. Give your child better vision for life!

What age can you start myopia control?

The earlier myopia is treated, the better the outcome. Treatment can begin at age 6, although patients up to age 25 can benefit from myopia control.

What is the Myopia Epidemic?

The Myopia Epidemic refers to the fact that not only are the amount of people who suffer from myopia increasing, but the severity of myopia is also increasing. In 1970, 20% of the US population was myopic; today, 50% are myopic. There is no other chronic disease growing as quickly as myopia.

What about glasses and contact lenses?

Traditional glasses and contact lenses can actually make myopia progress faster.
